Festival

Edinburgh is home to the largest Arts Festival anywhere in the world.

The Edinburgh Festival began back in 1947 and was designed to showcase music, theatre, opera and dance from around the world. That first year, 8 theatre groups who hadn’t been invited to the Festival also arrived in Edinburgh and performed their shows anyway, in what became known as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

As time went on, more Festivals sprung up and there are now many Festivals which all take place in July/August – see below for more details on these. If you are coming to Edinburgh for the Festival or the Fringe, it’s highly recommended that you book your accommodation early, as it often attracts in excess of 400,000 visitors to the City – almost doubling the population.
